The information needs of User-Centered research & design, and marketing all arise from studying people in different ways. Each builds up a vision about prospective people the product should serve, referred to as ‘users’ and ‘consumers’ respectively and how it should serve them. There is a gap between these visions which should be bridged. I want to see how this can be done in structuring the work and composition of the project teams in an R&D organization and how they work with marketing in the businesses they serve.

UCD in a PSA
My thesis project for my MS in Human-Computer Interaction Design (we call it a capstone at IU) was titled “Bringing a Human Centered Perspective to a Public Service Campaign. I received a $50,000 grant to coordinate the effort to evaluate the new media portion of the campaign. They subsequently became an ongoing client in my consulting business. I carried out three separate user studies over two years, made suggestions for site architecture, visual representation, interactive elements, and site strategy based on my findings and heuristic analysis.
